Hello everyone,

On May 17th, I joined the Mega Wandel Marathon, a walking event aimed at raising both money and awareness for children with disabilities. The goal? To help create a society where every child can participate fully and equitably.

I walked as part of a team from JongPIT, a Dutch organization led by young people with chronic conditions or disabilities. JongPIT works to empower others by ensuring their voices are heard in shaping education, healthcare, work, and broader societal policies. I volunteer with them in advocacy work, and this walk was just one of many ways we try to make a difference.

We walked 20 kilometers, and I’m proud to say the event raised over €200,000! That’s an incredible achievement, and I truly hope it leads to meaningful impact for the kids it supports.

While walking, we also recorded a little podcast episode (in Dutch sadly, sorry English speakers 😅) to capture the energy and conversations of the day. You can find the link in the beginning of the post.

If you know any young people with a disability or chronic condition that want to get involved in advocacy or activism, please share JongPIT with them. We’re always looking for more voices and positive energy.

I hope you enjoy the podcast!

Yours,

ihab

Group photo of eight young adults, all wearing purple T-shirts with the text “Mega Wandel Marathon.” They are standing and squatting in front of a large purple banner, partially reading: “for children with a disability.” Everyone is wearing a medal around their neck and holding a sign or heart, for example with “42 km,” “21 km,” “WE DID IT!” or a colored heart. They are smiling and look happy, likely because they just completed a walking marathon. The photo was taken outdoors on a sunny day, with trees in the background.

Two people, a woman and a man, are walking arm in arm at a sunny outdoor event. They are both wearing purple T-shirts with the text “Mega Wandel Marathon” and a yellow ribbon with a medal around their neck. The woman has blonde hair, wears sunglasses, and is holding a phone in her hand. The man has short dark hair and is wearing a black crossbody bag. A race number with 21388 is pinned to his chest. In the background, more people can be seen, some taking photos or filming with their phones. It seems to be a sporting or charity event, judging by the atmosphere and clothing.

Woodland walking path with people. The photo shows a wide, paved path running through a densely wooded forest. Tall trees with lush green leaves line both sides of the path, casting shadows onto it. Two people are walking side by side in the middle of the path, with a larger group visible further in the distance. Sunlight filters through the leaves, giving the scene a fresh and lively atmosphere. On the left, a small sign with an orange marking is attached to a tree.

Two people outside, selfie. They are both wearing purple T-shirts with yellow and white text reading: “Mega Wandel Marathon.” The woman on the right has blonde hair, is wearing sunglasses, and is smiling softly. The man on the left has short dark hair and a light beard. In the background, there is a grassy field, a wooden building, some trees, and a red bus. It’s sunny with a few clouds in the blue sky.

Group selfie of five young adults outdoors in a green, forested area. They are all wearing purple T-shirts with the text “Mega Wandel Marathon” in yellow and white letters. Everyone is smiling cheerfully at the camera. The woman in the center is wearing sunglasses and has a feather tattoo on her arm. The atmosphere is joyful and relaxed, and it looks like they are participating in a walking or sports event together. The background is filled with green leaves and trees, giving it a summery feel.
